At RaiseUP Faith, we believe in little people. We want to draw young minds and inspire young hearts with the love of God.

Why? Because it’s clear from reading that Bible just how precious children are to God! They are fearfully and wonderfully made by Him. They are seen and heard by Him. And they are very much part of His kingdom plans and purposes.

1. Verses that tell us that you’re never too little to learn about God’s BIG love

There are some things in life you might be too small for. But being God’s friend is definitely not one of them! Think only of Samuel, Jeremiah and Timothy – all of them called to BIG things while they were still young.

We learn so much in the first years of our life. And perhaps the most important lesson we can ever learn as children is that God made us, loves us, and has a plan for our lives. It’s a lesson that will stay with us – and one that we will learn more and more, and over and over again, as we commit to following Jesus.

‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door-frames of your houses and on your gates.’ (Deuteronomy 6:5-9)

‘Start children off on the way they should go,
and even when they are old they will not turn from it.’ (Proverbs 22:6)

‘Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.’ (1 Timothy 4:12)

‘The word of the Lord came to me, saying,

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
before you were born I set you apart;
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

“Alas, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.”

But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.’ (Jeremiah 1:4-8)

2. Verses that show us how God loves, loves, LOVES children!

There’s really no doubt about it. Jesus shows us God’s heart – and his heart is definitely with tiny people! In Jesus’ time, children weren't considered particularly significant. This would explain why, in a famous episode in the gospels, the disciples were so keen to shoo them away from Jesus. To their mind, they were distracting him from his important work of talking to people and healing them.

But Jesus shows his disciples that the children were just as precious as anyone – and that they had a special place in God’s kingdom. With their openness, and inquisitiveness, and trusting faith, children help us understand what it looks like to live for and love God each day.

‘Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”’ (Matthew 19:4)

‘[Jesus] took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.’ (Mark 10:16)

‘He [Jesus] called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.”’ (Matthew 18:2-5)

‘...when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things [Jesus] did and the children shouting in the temple courts, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David,’ they were indignant.

‘Do you hear what these children are saying?’ they asked him.

‘Yes,’ replied Jesus, ‘have you never read,

‘“From the lips of children and infants
you, Lord, have called forth your praise”?’ (Matthew 21:15-16)

3. Verses that remind us that we are ALL God’s children

When Jesus taught his disciples to pray, he began with the words ‘Our Father in Heaven’. There are so many titles for God that he could have chosen; any number of ways of addressing Him. But he chose ‘Father’ - a word that speaks volumes about who we are and what we mean to God.

We might grow older. We might become adults and ‘put away our childish things’ (1 Corinthians 13:11). But the Bible reminds us that we will never, ever stop being God’s children: continually seen, intimately known and unconditionally loved by our Heavenly Father. Isn’t that amazing?

‘For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.’ (Psalm 139:13-16)

‘See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!’ (1 John 3:1)

‘Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.’ (John 1:12)

‘In Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.’ (Galatians 3:26)
